Selections from the concept album Britney Spears + Noise = HOT (8 tracks supercomposing Britney songs with avant-garde and experimental music, featuring Arthur Doyle, The Dead C, William S. Burroughs, Nam June Paik, Sun Ra, Pierre Schaeffer) are finally up on Soundcloud. The full 8 track album is also available for free download here. In other news I have created a torrent for it on Pirate Bay, and would greatly appreciate it if anyone who had the spare bandwidth could seed it for a while.  If you enjoyed this, you may also want to check out Britney Spears + Noise = HOT Vol. 2.

“Britney Spears + Francis Dhomont = HOT” (Mashup, 2010)

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

..

..

..

..

Minimalist musical mashup superimposing Francis Dhomont’s “Thème de la fuite” over top of Britney Spears’ “Circus.” Dhomont is an experimental composer credited with developing musique concrete as an art form in the 1940s and 50s. Part of the ongoing Britney Spears Best of Noise project.

The first 8 tracks of this project were released on the concept album Britney Spears + Noise = HOT. Download the album for free.

“Provence. A summer evening, the window open wide on a slowly darkening sky. Through this deep, blemishless blue, the flight of swallows: a strident, constantly changing feeding dance. The delicious night continues to fall. There are the sounds of the village preparing for the night festival; the echoes reach me. A jet begins its descent into Marignanne…” (Francis Dhomont)

“Britney Spears + Bruce Gilbert = HOT” (Mashup, 2010)

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

..

..

..

..

The seventh in my series of Britney Spears experimental remixes, superimposing Spears’ “Everytime” over top of B.C. Gilbert’s “Slot Andalou” (from the album Ordier). Bruce Gilbert was the guitarist for legendary avant-garde rock band, The Wire, who went on to produce a number of solo recordings in the 80s and 90s. Part of the ongoing Britney Spears Best of Noise project.

The first 8 tracks of this project were released on the concept album Britney Spears + Noise = HOT. Download the album for free.

This is not a remix, as such, but a rhizomatic layering (rhimix) of two tracks supercomposed over top of one another in the hope that multiple points of contact might be established between them, which would not have been there previously. The editing on each track is minimal as I am more interested in the chance occurrences which come from superimposing two separate tracks, rather than constructing a traditional remix. The ethics of this project is inspired by both John Oswald’s plunderphonics and John Cage’s Music of Chance.

“Britney Spears + Yximalloo = HOT” (Mashup, 2010)

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

..

..

..

..

Minimalist mashup superimposing Yximalloo’s “Why To Christmas” (from the album Fangs of Lucifer) over top of the Britney Spears song “3.” Yximalloo (a.k.a. Naofumi Ishimaru) is a Japanese experimental/noise/pop musician, best known for his collaborations with Jad Fair of Half Japanese. DOWNLOAD.

From the 8 track concept album Britney Spears + Noise = HOT Vol. 2 (mashing Britney Spears songs with noise and avant-garde musicians). Listen to the selections on Soundcloud or download the full album for free here. Part of the ongoing Britney Spears Best of Noise project. If you enjoyed this you may also want to check out Britney Spears + Noise = HOT Vol. 1 (including The Dead C, William S. Burroughs, Arthur Doyle, Nam June Paik, Pierre Schaeffer and Sun Ra).

“The trouble with Japanese pop, Yximalloo says, is that Japanese are brainwashed by caucasian culture. In Japan, 98% of people are following trends and only 2% of people are setting them. He recently heard Pizzicato 5 for the first time, and looks disappointed when I tell him they’ve split up.” (read more)

“Britney Spears + Henri Pousseur = HOT” (Mashup, 2010)

Monday, January 10th, 2011

..

..

..

..

Minimalist mashup superimposing Henri Pousseur’s “Scambi” (Exchanges) over top of the Britney Spears song “If You Seek Amy.” Henri Pousseur was an experimental composer whose tape work “Scambi” was particularly unique, in that it uses what Pousseur called an ‘open form’, meaning that it is meant to be assembled and reassembled in infinite variations (prefiguring concepts like ‘open source’ and ‘creative commons’). For this reason multiple versions of “Scambi” exist (the version I have used was Pousseur’s 1957 mix).

“I think composition will not always be the production of closed and finished objects which one can buy and sell… We will have to think increasingly in a collective way… In fact this has always been the case.” (Henri Pousseur, read more)

“Pieces of Me, No. 1 & 2″ (Photochop, Thistle Hall, 2011, curated by Markus McIntyre)

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

..

..

..

Two A1 collages using images of Britney Spears, made for Photochop III (curated by Markus McIntyre, Thistle Hall, 2011); “A collective exhibition of collage images from print using photo chop, scissors and glue… salut[ing] the dawn of photo lithography, the 120 year old tradition of processing images for the mass print medium.” My Britney collages were laminated and displayed on various doors around the gallery, in the way that a poster might appear in a teenage bedroom. The exhibition also featured work by Claire Harris, Will Frew, Robyn Kenealy, Ruby Nekk, Sam Stephens, Don Smith, Curtis Nixon and Di Dixon (among others).

On the opening night I also performed as Supercomposer for the first time (see below) alongside The Unknown Rockstar and The Doll, reproducing a number of my Britney Spears + Noise = HOT remixes in a live setting (and some other bits and pieces, including a HOT Jay-Z vs. Kevin Drumm mashup).

“On this week at Thistle Hall is the biennial PhotoChop exhibition, centered around the art of collage… with a selection of fine works including repurposed postcards, a scenic Urewera setting for Willie Apiata and a couple of fine posters celebrating the golden years of Britney Spears.” (Wellingtonista, read more)
