This poem is a stunner Diane. It moves me deeply. The word choice is excellent and it is just damn well constructed!!! Thanks for the engaging read.

I agree! This verse is absolutely stellar Diane! I love the image of the child playfully (in my mind) walking a “figure 8″ around her father’s legs. For me, it represents not only the cycle of wealth and poverty, but also the child’s unawareness of the crisis around her. A moment of innocence in a situation that was created in large part by government corruption. Very nice!

Any connection to the bee dancing an 8 shaped waggle dance, to signify food has been found? Great hint and poem. Thanks.

I second Laurence. And the opening line is great, effectively setting the scene and tone for the poem.

Diane, a riveting read. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, everyone! Dear Editors–my last name is MAYR, there is no “E” in it!

Diane – I am SO SO SO SO sorry!! Your name has been changed accordingly. I hope that this hasn’t offended in any way. I must have written it down wrong in my notes. Many apologies.

    All the best,

  7. Diane Mayr

No, I’m not offended! At least you didn’t ask me, “Are you sure there’s no E?” I’ve gotten that before! When you get a chance, could you add the link to my blog on the poet bio? http://www.randomnoodling.com

I’m tickled pink to be part of Haiku News. Many thanks! –Diane

It took me a while to get this piece, but once I did it really struck me. A fantastic poem Diane. Thank you for sharing it.

Pathos all the more powerful because of the poet’s understatement

Outstanding! I agree with everything that Laurence says. Inspired way to incorporate the ‘figure 8′ from the headline. There’s a whole story in these three lines.
