    wow – I love the ambiguity of this: is the loan manager looking at his own hands or her/his clients? why? there’s something so expressive about frustration and resignation there.

    Thanks Allison – that was a last minute change from ‘his’ to ‘their’. The his had two problems for me in the end: 1) It seemed to imply that it was the bank manager’s hands (even though the structure was still ambiguous) and 2) It was too gendered for my liking, Now, the gender is left ambiguous as well.

    Glad it worked for you in terms of increasing frustration – and in a way the ambiguity can be seen as a structural frustration for the audience. Hmmmm… maybe, or am I just tooting my own horn?? It’s not like I intended all this consciously – but I did think long and hard about the shift from ‘his hands’ to ‘their hands’.
