A very understated haiku, Laurence, with a great deal of emotion compressed underneath. I like the way the word declined can be read two ways: refused or lowered in value. I also like the non-chalance and pretense in “pretending” not to need such a vital thing as milk. A well-executed haiku.

Thanks Jack! What a great reading. I’m really glad this poem worked. I’ve been seeing incidents like this around a few of the local stores in my area. The recession is hitting everyone in different ways. I was just listening to an NPR special where they were discussing how “back to school” sells have gone down 40% because most teens have no jobs or spare cash to spend.

I agree with Mr. Galmitz–succinct version of a very large problem, which is made more ironic by the worldview extant in the article referenced. People once on the edge are now over it.

Agreed – this poem is a stunner Laurence. Perfectly stated in so few words. Brilliant.

    Thanks guys!

@ Bob- Yeah, it seems that when people get too deep in the hole a kind of “to hell with it” mentality develops.
