  1. Chen-ou Liu

This poem offers a window into human nature.

    James, an engaging read. Thanks!

    Happy New Year!

  2. Laurence Stacey

I agree with Chen-ou! This is an excellent poem and a great play on an older piece written by Issa. Lovely work!

  3. Chris White

    Lovely piece.

I thought it was very Issa-esque – Laurence, that explains why!

  4. Dick Whyte

I agree – this is a lovely poem, and the Issa reference is perfect. A great way to see in the new year.

  5. Neal Whitman

Another “fan” here: what I love most in this piece is the dual juxtaposition: two images within the haiku that do and do not go together plus the haiku per se and the news story. Reverberation X 2. Bravo.

    Thank you everyone.
Yes, this is a version I did of a poem by Issa, such a wonderful poet. I love the unexpected justapositions in the classical Japanese poets. Another I like, that has a similar juxtaposition, is Basho’s:

    when in Kyoto
    I long to be
    in Kyoto
