HOT Photography: “Image Gangs” (Richard Prince)

Richard Prince’s rephotographed image gangs (from the 80s) are HOT! Drawing on magazine images, there is something about their aesthetic which prefigures internet image search engines. So HOT!

Richard Prince - Gangs

..

..

“I must have taken a hundred pictures of watches, but never wore one. The way they were presented in say, the magazines, looking like living things. That’s what 1 liked. They look like they had egos. They were presented almost with a comic effect, when, in fact, they were just watches, alone or on a wrist. The more you saw them, the more unfictional they became. They would pop up around the city, on bus stops, all of a sudden—like the cowboy in the Marlboro ads.” (Richard Prince, in Bomb Magazine)

“That’s what happens when it gets to be uncanny or sublime. If the work has that effect, whether or not it’s representational or abstract ceases to be an issue. It becomes something that starts to have its own kind of life.” (Richard Prince, ibid)

HOT Digital Comics: “The Nietzsche Family Circus” (Losangeles, 2010)

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

..

A fucking HOT artwork which randomly pairs Family Circus comics with Nietzsche quotes. Rhizome: multiple points of contact between strata. As Nietzsche wrote, “All things are subject to interpretation whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth.” Thanks to Andrei Molotiu for bringing this to my attention (via Facebook).

HOT Digital Comic: “Hegel: Night of the World” (Andre Molotiu, 2010)

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

..

..

HOT digital comic by Andre Molotiu who edited the (first) Abstract Comics Anthology, recently published by Fantagraphics (featuring a range of fantastic work). He is also the administrator of Abstract Comics: The Blog (also featuring a range of fantastic work) which I highly recommend checking out.

“The human being is this night, this empty nothing, that contains everything in its simplicity—an unending wealth of many presentations, images, of which none happens to occur to him—or which are not present. This night, the inner of nature, that exists here — pure self — in phantasmagorical presentations, is night all around it, here shoots a bloody head — there another white shape, suddenly here before it, and just so disappears. One catches sight of this night when one looks human beings in the eye — into a night that becomes awful, it suspends the night of the world here in an opposition. In this night being has returned.” (George Hegel, Realphilosophie)

HOT Photo Collage: “Jessica Simpson – Hairstyles” (Anon, 2009)

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

..

..

“People think updos are so hard, but they’re not. Your hair should look tousled and undone. If I’m in a mood to go out and feel hot and sexy, I want long hair that I can feel on my back. But I also like bed head. I’ll usually wash my hair and let it air-dry wavy, but if I’m just in a hang-out mood, I won’t even wash it. I’ll wait until it smells.” (Jessica Simpson)

HOT Comic Art: “What a misunderstanding!” (Cory Arcangel, 2009-2010)

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

..

..

HOT cartoon generator from the brain of Cory Arcangel. Every week the New Yorker runs a competition in which readers are invited to make a caption for a one panel comic. Cory designed a computer program which simply grabs the cartoon every week, adds the caption “What a misunderstanding!” and posts it to a blog. So simple. So HOT. Once again, Cory makes my world a brighter place to be.

HOT Digital Comics: “Garfield Random Generator” (Anon, 2005)

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

..

..

HOT Garfield comics random generator in the spirit of John Cage’s music of chance. As the site says, “So this guy noticed that Garfield comics make just as much sense if you throw random panels together, and sometimes are actually pretty funny. He got a cease and desist letter. So he made the code available for people who wanted to try it for themselves. Here we go!” I am not sure if anyone knows who made the original site but a lot of people have made their own since. Click on any image below to start making your own.

HOT Animated GIFs: “Abstract 8, Series 2″ & “Abstract 3, Series 2″ (Draw, 2010)

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

..

..

HOT animated GIFs by comic artist Draw. These works, both in their comic and animated form, suggest a complex meditation on the nature of perception, in relation to the visible and invisible. We also highly recommend checking out his artist website Drawing Silence, featuring both narrative and non-narrative comics, as well as a great collection of abstract animations. HOT!
