HOT Digital Photography: “Nudes” (Thomas Ruff, 2003)
..
..
HOT processed photographs by Thomas Ruff, exploring the impact of the internet and digitization on photography and pornography. As Ruff writes, “I always want to take the medium of photography into the picture, so that you are always aware that you are looking at an image – a photograph… so, in the picture I hope you can see two things: the image itself, plus the reflection – or the thinking – about photography. I hope it’s visible. I’m an investigator, and it is as if I am investigating the grammar of photography.”

I read the Interviews, I was a little disappointed with most of the interviews. They all came as a bit nostalgic for his older famous work, his portraits. I guess because I wanted to know more about his more resent stuff.
I thought the best interview was the Gil blank one

Bummer – yeah, I couldn’t find a single interview with him about the porn works, which are clearly some of his most interesting. I was also really interested in the series where he was working with JPGs and making them really small and then compressing them and making them bigger again. Very interesting. But a bummer about the interviews. Oh, well, I’ll keep looking…
